Introduction
   

The Institute of Crustal Dynamics. was founded in 1966 on the initiative of Professor Li Si-guang after the Xingtai earthquake. It was originally the Seismogeological Brigade under the Ministry of the Geology. In 1971 the Brigade was put under the administration of the State Seimological Bureau. In February 1986 it was renamed as the Institute of Crustal Dynamics.

The main task of the institute is to carry out basic researches and promote applications related to the mother earth measures, such as continent earthquake conformation mechanics dynamo state study, earthquake intensity prediction, reservoir place a premium to earthquake , and many others. The institute has seven research divisions, three scientific research assistant departments, and science and technology innovation base of WuHai. They are respectively working in different fields of earth science including the crustal dynamics(stress and emergency),earthquake premonitor observation theory and technology, faultage mechanics dynamics and defortmation observation study, rock mechanics dynamics and stress measures study, earthquake supervice prediction theory and method investigation, prevent and reduct disaster engineering technology study, earthquake succor technology laboratory, information network technology appliance study.

There are 354 scientific and technical workers in the institute, among them 120 are senior researchers, 150 are engineers and assistant researchers. There are 30 senior researchers and engineers in the institute who receive the special government allowances bestowed on outstanding scientists.

In the recent twenty years a number of composite measuring systems for rock and soil engineering, including matched data acquisition art transmission units, have been developed in the institute.They are widely used for observing the ground stress and strain, displacement, deformation, temperature, vibration, tilt, pore pressure, and for geophysical well logging.

Besides doing seismological researches the institute also provides technical services to various kinds of engineering projects, such as seismic microzoning, stability and seismic safety evaluation of engineering sites, studying and monitoring active faultage, monitoring tunnel deformation and the stability of steep slopes, determination of rock mechanical properites, engineering stress measurement, studying the mechanism of extensive damage of oil-well casing, engineering geological surveying and field original testing. In addition to these various measuring techniques (including hardware and software) are available for petroleum exploitation, reservoir, mining, railway, nuclear energy and other engineering projects.
